Statewide Waterfowl Count Scheduled for Jan 19

The NY State Ornithological Association’s annual statewide waterfowl count is scheduled for Sunday, Jan. 19, 2020.  DOAS covers Otsego Lake and the Susquehanna River above Unadilla, the Unadilla River, and Cannonsville Reservoir and the W. Branch of the Delaware River. This effort involves surveying waterways where they can be seen, and identifying and counting ducks and geese.  The totals are used by the Department of Environmental Conservation in managing these species over the upcoming year. The Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC) is a free, fun, and easy event that engages bird watchers of all ages in counting birds to create a real-time snapshot of bird populations. On Saturday, May 9, Delaware-Otsego Audubon Society will lead a walk at the Oneonta Susquehanna Greenway (OSG) trail, located on Silas Lane, off Rte. 205 in Oneonta’s west end to view returning migrant birds. This will be an easy hike on level ground for about 2 hours, starting at 8:00AM. Participants should meet at the parking lot by the soccer fields just past the transfer station. Saturday, May 16 is this year’s Big Day for DOAS. The Big Day is a group effort in which birders, working alone, in pairs, or in small groups, can maintain social distance and adopt infection-avoidance procedures while enjoying the outdoors. On Sunday, May 17, Delaware-Otsego Audubon Society Co President, Andy Mason will host a morning bird walk for all interested.  Meet at the Sanctuary Property at 52 Grange Hall Road Spur, Oneonta.  The walk will begin promptly at 8am.  The walk should turn up a variety of returning migrants, including warblers, orioles, thrushes, tanagers and others.
