June 21: Walk on the Flat Side. Patricia Riddell Kent and Steve Kent lead this easy, 1.5 mile hike in the northern portion of Robert V. Riddell State Park. The walk takes us along Schenevus Creek and past old homestead sites. Meet at 4 p.m. at the main park entrance on State Route 28.

July 9: Water chestnut hand pulling, Goodyear Lake. OCCA and the Goodyear Lake Association have been working together to eliminate the highly-invasive water chestnut from the lake. Bring your own canoe or kayak, or borrow one of ours. Meet at the Portlandville fishing access site on Route 28 at 9 a.m. and work until noon. Please call ahead to reserve space.

 

July 12: Otsego Lakes Festival. The seventh Otsego Lakes Festival will be held this year on Saturday, July 12 at Lakefront Park in Cooperstown from noon to 5 p.m. Organized under the aegis of the Otsego County Water Quality Coordinating Committee, the Lakes Festival offers residents and visitors alike a day full of fun and festivities celebrating our lakes – educational exhibits, children’s activities, hands-on workshops and lake tours will all focus on the importance of protecting our waterways and ensuring water quality throughout our region.

 

OCCA Executive Director Darla M. Youngs serves as WQCC facilitator and on the Lakes Festival Planning Committee. To make a financial contribution toward the Lakes Festival, or to register as an exhibitor or vendor, please contact Youngs at admin@occainfo.org or (607) 547-4488.

 

July 18: Western Exposure, Fetterley Forest Hike. In 2012, Fetterley Forest became Otsego Land Trust’s first public conservation area. Sara Scheeren, of the Otsego Land Trust, and OCCA’s Jeff O’Handley lead this late afternoon hike in Fetterley Forest, on Panther Mountain in Springfield. Bring a camera and enjoy the spectacular view of Canadarago Lake.Meet at 5 p.m. at the parking area on Roses Hill Road.

 

July 19: Highway Clean Up. Join OCCA beautify a 2-mile stretch of State Highway 80 in

Springfield. 9 a.m. to noon. Gloves, light refreshments and safety equipment provided.

 

July 22: Plainfield State Forest. OCCA and the Susquehanna Chapter, Adirondack Mountain Club join forces to lead this hike up Noah’s Rump, the high point in Plainfield State Forest. 10 a.m.
