Leatherstocking Golf Course Bird Box Report for 5/7/13

Boxes inspected on May 7, 2013 by Ruthe Ayres and John Davis.

Boxes 1 and 2 near Golf Maintenance Building. Boxes 3 and 4 southwest corner of upper golf course. Boxes 5 and 6 northeast corner of upper golf course. Boxes 7 and 8 in depression north of road leading to club house, boxes 9 and 10 east of the highway, across from the Farmers’ Museum Maintenance Building.

Box 1. Tree Swallow peering out of box. Early nest.
Box 2. Empty

Box 3. Dead, Desiccated male tree Swallow in box. See photo. Removed.
Box 4. Nest of pine needles with occasional feather = Tree Swallow nest.
Box 5. Empty.
Box 6. Bluebird nest with 5 eggs. No bluebirds around. See photo.
Box 7. Tree Swallow on box. Dead Desiccated Tree swallow in box. Also an active wasps’ nest. Both removed.

Box 8. Tree Swallow nest with many feathers.
Box 9. Empty.
Box 10. Bluebird nest with 5 eggs. See photo. Bluebird pair in nearby tree.
SUMMARY: Active Eastern Bluebird nesting with with 5 eggs in two boxes. Dead adult male Tree Swallow in two boxes, cause unclear but a leading possibility is exhausted bird after migration went into box and couldn’t get out.
