This is a recording of a webinar presented by Delaware-Otsego Audubon Society (DOAS) on January 20, 2023. DOAS Board Director, Landa Palmer. presents “Puffin and Bird Adventures, An Evening at Grimsey Island, Iceland”, a compilation of photos and stories from her trip during mid-summer 2022. Have you ever set a goal to go somewhere out of the ordinary? Well, Landa Palmer did just that and headed to a remote island. She was on a quest to get above the arctic circle, and it’s just that on Grimsey Island, which is as north as you can go in Iceland. Puffins and photography were just a part of her goal. Many other birds were discovered, new friendships, and a part of the world she had only dreamed about.
After a rough ferry ride (and lots of mints, ginger tabs and Dramamine) in mid-July, Landa arrived via the Arctic Sea in Grimsey for a weeklong adventure with other bird watchers. Within a 5 minute walk from the guest house where she stayed, there were Puffins and Snow buntings in full plumage. Since it was mid-summer, and she was very close to the arctic circle, the days were long with only slightly more than 2 hrs. between sunset and sunrise each day. Catching the early morning birds at 2am would certainly be a challenge!
If you know Landa, you are surely familiar with her photography work. From exquisitely timed bird photos (and the patience and eye to achieve those amazing results) to her gorgeous seasonal landscape images on the farm where she lives, Landa brings her abundant joy for birds, nature and photography to create captivating images that stay with you long after viewing them. See for yourself and take that once-in-a-lifetime journey along with Landa and her lens. We know you will have a great evening with us! A resident of Delaware County, Landa Palmer is a Nursing Professor at SUNY Delhi and has been a professional nurse for forty years. Her love of birds and photography led her to DOAS where she has been a board member for three years. She is the chairperson for the DOAS Accessibility committee.
