IMPORTANT: PLEASE NOTE DATE CHANGE
Join DOAS Board Director, Chris DeCesare, on Saturday, March 23rd APRIL 6 for a birding field trip to Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge and the adjacent Wetlands Complex to view migratory waterfowl and shorebirds on their annual journey north to their breeding grounds. The area is comprised of 50,000 acres of wetlands and upland habitat north of Cayuga Lake and is a globally significant Important Bird Area because of the number of waterfowl that stop there during migration season. Past sightings include a variety of ducks, snow geese, swans, bald eagles, herons and sandhill cranes.

On Sunday, April 14 from 6:45 to 8:15 PM, join Otsego Land Trust and Delaware-Otsego Audubon Society for our annual Woodcock Walk at the Parslow Road Conservation Area. DOAS locals Sandy Bright and Charlie Scheim will lead a walk to observe the spring courtship ritual of the woodcock.
The woodcock usually spends its time hidden on the forest floor probing for earthworms in moist soil, but on spring evenings males perform a dance in scrub fields to attract potential mates. This wonderful display occurs in three parts: the strut, the launch skyward, and the spiral back to earth accompanied by buzzy calls and twittering wing sounds.

The walk will begin at 6:45 PM in the parking lot with an introduction to the woodcock and its habits, and a walk on the trail listening and looking for the birds that inhabit this protected property. The sun is expected to set around 7:30 pm at which time the group will position itself in the best location to view and count the Woodcocks. The trail will be a path through forests and fields that is fairly level, although at times quite uneven, and at times muddy and wet. Note also that there are no restroom facilities at the parking lot. The round-trip distance will be approximately a half mile, and the second half of the walk will be in darkness, so it is useful to bring a flashlight. Then, participants will walk on the trail discussing the varied habitats on the property as they make their way to the best spot to observe the woodcocks. Waterproof footwear, a headlamp or flashlight, and binoculars are recommended.
American Woodcock spend most of their time hidden in fields and on the forest floor, where they probe for earthworms. But on spring nights, males perform very conspicuous displays, giving a buzzy “peent” call, then launching into the air. Their erratic display flight includes a distinctive, twittering flight sound and ends with a steep dive back to the ground. The wet thickets, shrubby swamps, and open fields at Parslow Road Conservation Area are ideal habitats for these interesting birds that have unfortunately seen a population decline over the years.

Saturday, May 18 is this year’s Big Day for DOAS.
The Big Day is a group effort in which birders, working alone, in pairs, or in small groups, can maintain social distance and adopt infection-avoidance procedures while enjoying the outdoors. We will try to locate as many bird species as we can in a single fun day on Saturday May 20. Birders can spend any amount of time they choose within that 24 hours, and report on their efforts to the Big Day coordinator, Charlie Scheim.
Everyone is welcome, novice or experienced. If you are interested and have not participated before, please contact Charlie at 607-434-4880 (voice or text) or scheimc@hartwick.edu to get information on joining in the fun.
DOAS Bird Checklist – revised 2020.

DOAS BIG DAY BIRD COUNT RULES (Modified from ABA):
A Big Day Count is a single-team effort in which the primary objectives are (1) to identify as many bird species as possible during a single calendar day and (2) to strive to have all team members identify all species recorded.
Counting
- Count only species listed in a recognized field guide.
- Birds must be conclusively identified by sight or sound. Use common sense: if in doubt about the bird’s identity, don’t count it.
- An introduced species may be counted.
- Birds counted must be alive, wild, and unrestrained. Domestic species are not to be included. Birds attracted to tape-recorders or feeders may be counted. Injured birds may be counted if wild and unrestrained. Eggs do not count as birds.
Time – All counting must be within a single 24-hour period, on a single calendar day, determined by where the Count begins or ends.
Area– Any geographic area within the region served by DOAS may be covered. A team’s coverage area may overlap that of other teams.
Travel – Travel may be by any means, provided that all participants remain within direct voice-contact distance during all travel (except for separate motorized travel or for “timeouts” for gas, food, rest, etc.).
Participants
- Any number of participants may constitute a team.
- Nonparticipating companions may accompany the team and may record or may drive vehicles.
Conduct
Each participant must:
- remain within direct voice-contact distance of all other participants at all times, except during time-outs.
- make every reasonable effort to identify personally and to help other team members identify every species counted by the team.
- count only birds personally and unquestionably identified.
- review the Big Day Count Rules before the start of the Count.
Outside Information
- During the Count, teams must make every reasonable effort to avoid receiving bird-finding help from nonparticipants.
- Any information received prior to the Count may be used during the Count.
- Ethics– Each participant should strive to maintain proper birding ethics at all times.

Event Details
Delaware-Otsego Audubon Society will host a morning bird walk starting at 8am on June 15 in conjunction with Exploration Days at Hanford Mills. Veteran birders Suzanne Gaynor and Kathryn Davino will co-lead the walks around the Hanford Mills property. We invite both beginners and experienced birders. The walk covers fairly level terrain and will last about 90 minutes. The trail traverses a variety of surfaces: grass, gravel, and boardwalk, and does include an occasional step up/down and a few gentle slopes. The total distance traveled is about .5 miles. There are no rest areas along the route, but there are benches near the pond, and picnic tables at the parking lot. Accessible bathrooms are available. Participants should meet in the event parking lot (south side of Rt. 12, opposite museum buildings) and bring binoculars, insect repellent, water, and curiosity about birds! When we return to the parking lot, we invite folks to join us as we drive a short distance to see a Bald Eagle nest that currently has a pair of adults caring for one or more fledglings. This is a free program. Call Kathryn Davino (607-746-7396) with questions.

Event Details
Join DOAS Director Charlie Scheim, Bird Sightings author Sandy Bright, and the Environmental Director of the Uplands Center Renee Hardenkamp for a morning bird walk at the Uplands Center in Walton, NY (2641 Dunk Hill Road) on Saturday, June 29 at 8:00am. Our focus will be on observing birds and their breeding behaviors., will accompany us on this walk. The Uplands Center (www.uplandscenter.org) has acres of fields and forests, great habitat for breeding birds. We will meet just outside the main lodge. The walk will begin on a mostly level grassy path through a large field where we will likely find a number of grassland species. We will then follow a path through a wooded area with some gentle uphills and downhills, seeking woodland inhabitants. There are accessible rest rooms at the walk’s beginning and end and some rest spots along the way. The walk will likely last about an hour and a half. This program is free and there is no pre-registration required. You may call Charlie Scheim at 607-434-4880 for more information or for any last minute weather concerns.

Rain date: August 3
Join DOAS summer interns Cami Robinson-Parisi and Kaylee Haig for a kid-friendly morning bird hike for families with children ages 8+. We will walk around the DOAS Sanctuary trails as we listen and look for signs of bird activity around the property!
This walk will be beginner-led and beginner-friendly, taking a “slow birding” approach, focusing on what we see the birds in front of us doing and what we can infer from these observations. We will also compile a list of recorded species to submit to eBird and follow up with a brief discussion about citizen science.
Participants should wear comfortable, weather-appropriate clothing and shoes for the hike. Be sure to bring water and sun protection. Everyone is encouraged to bring binoculars and field guides if they have them!
Accessibility: Accessible Porta-Potty available. Trail terrain is fairly flat, with a few uphill/medium-difficulty sections.

On Friday, October 18 at 7:30 p.m., Delaware-Otsego Audubon Society will welcome keynote speaker Scott Harris via Zoom, who will present remotely on his book RaptorQuest: Chasing America’s Raptors. Harris spent 17 months chasing 53 Raptors across 34 states.
RaptorQuest is about his adventures, misadventures, successes, and failures. Harris details days thirty-six degrees below zero to ones over one hundred degrees, spotting a bird just in time or dealing with frustrating misses. His book is about the birds—of course—but it’s also about the people he met, the things he learned, and why he’s already working on his next adventure.

About the Presenter
Scott Harris and his wife Randi retired to South Carolina in March of 2020—something Scott will tell you was one of the best decisions they have made in their forty-four years of marriage. It was also when he first started birding—a hobby he never imagined himself participating in, but now can’t imagine living without.
They sold their long-time home and business, Mustang Marketing, a marketing/branding company they had owned for thirty-five years. They are blessed that both their children and their grandson are also in South Carolina.
While in California, Scott had a syndicated newspaper column and two weekly radio shows. He and his son Justin also hosted a Los Angeles Dodgers weekly live radio show. Scott sat on dozens of boards over the years, including Boys & Girls Club, United Way, The Sheriff’s Foundation, Pepperdine University, Moorpark College, and California State University Northridge.
In the month before leaving Ventura County, Scott was honored as Man of the Year, with his company having won Business of the Year two years previously. His interests and hobbies include the largest collection of John Steinbeck’s Travels with Charley in the world, playing harmonica in a blues band for five years, and writing (he has written almost fifty books in the past six years—though RaptorQuest is his first entrée into the world of birding).

We’ve all heard amazing facts about bird migration—the long distances that birds travel, the ways that they navigate, and more. But have you ever wondered how we figured all of this out?
While working for the American Ornithological Society, Rebecca Heisman became fascinated with the varied and creative techniques that scientists have used to study bird migration, and this eventually became the basis for her book Flight Paths: How a Passionate and Quirky Group of Pioneering Scientists Solved the Mystery of Bird Migration.
On Friday, November 15, Heisman will share some surprising stories from the history of bird migration research and discuss why understanding migration is so crucial for bird conservation.
Join us via Zoom for this 40-minute presentation on the history of bird migration research.

About the Presenter
Rebecca Heisman is an award-winning science writer who lives in Walla Walla, Washington, and has worked with organizations including the Audubon Society, the American Bird Conservancy, the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, and the American Ornithological Society. Flight Paths is her first book.

Join the Delaware-Otsego Audubon Society for a visit to Falcon Heart Rescue!
Rehabilitator Deb Saltis of Falcon Heart Rescue in Herkimer, NY has visited the Delaware-Otsego Audubon Society regularly to display rescued birds of prey at our Open House. We are now planning on visiting her facility to see more rehabbed animals and learn about the good work they do.
The trip is scheduled for Saturday, November 23 (with Sunday, November 24 as a weather date). We will carpool from the Ford Ave. parking lot across from the YMCA in Oneonta at 9:30 a.m. for the approximately 1 hour trip to Falcon Heart. Since wildlife rehabilitation is supported solely by donations and out-of-pocket, we are suggesting a donation to Falcon Heart.

Event Details
Join Delaware-Otsego Audubon Society (DOAS) on Friday, January 17 at 7:30 p.m. on Zoom, for a presentation on Birdability’s initiatives to enhance access and inclusivity for birders with disabilities and other health challenges.
Cat Fribley, Executive Director of Birdability.org, and Virginia Rose, founder of Birdability, will delve into the organization’s mission, providing a detailed exploration of its efforts to make birding more accessible and inclusive, and how we all have a role.
This session will introduce the Birdability Map, provide information about barriers and what helps create access for birders with disabilities and other health concerns, and offer practical insights for creating accessible events and spaces. Attendees will gain actionable tips and tools to help create access and inclusion in their communities.
Presenter Bio
Cat Fribley (she/her) serves as the Executive Director of Birdability. With a rich background in nonprofit development, a passion for birding, and a steadfast commitment to disability rights, she brings a unique perspective to this role. Cat’s journey into birding began in college, where it became a source of mental health support and healing following a PTSD diagnosis. Over time, a series of physical injuries and illnesses led her to seek adaptive ways to continue birding as a form of mindfulness and connection with nature, despite limited mobility. Her experiences navigating accessible birding opportunities while traveling to all 50 states have made her especially attuned to the work of Birdability and the importance of the Birdability Map. She now resides in Iowa City, IA, with her wife and two indoor cats, within a beloved community and among a variety of backyard birds.
Virginia Rose (she/her) fell off a horse at the age of 14 which resulted in a spinal cord injury. A wheelchair user ever since, she began birding 17 years ago and discovered her best self in nature. She founded Birdabilty in 2018 and leads accessible Birdability outings for Travis Audubon and at birding festivals each year. As a retired high school English teacher, she is passionate about bringing the same joy, empowerment and community she found in birding and nature to others who have mobility challenges.

This season’s field trip to view wintering Bald Eagles around the Delaware County rivers and reservoirs is scheduled for Saturday, January 18, 2025. The trip explores area rivers and reservoirs where eagles concentrate around open water in the region to feed. Past trips have turned up 20+ birds. Other raptors and waterfowl are usually sighted also. We will stop at a local restaurant for lunch for interested participants.
This year’s trip is open to the public, and takes place mostly by car, with a small amount of walking on level ground. Conditions may be snowy or icy.
Carpools and caravans will leave the Dietz St. parking lot across from the YMCA in Oneonta at 8:00 a.m. Participants can also be picked up en-route in Delhi and Walton. Return to Oneonta will be mid to late afternoon. Carpooling is strongly encouraged.

Event Details
The Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC) is a free, fun, and easy event that engages bird watchers of all ages in counting birds to create a real-time snapshot of bird populations. Participants are asked to count birds for as little as 15 minutes (or as long as they wish) on one or more days of the four-day event and report their sightings online at birdcount.org. Anyone can take part in the Great Backyard Bird Count, from beginning bird watchers to experts, and you can participate from your backyard, or anywhere in the world.
Each checklist submitted during the GBBC helps researchers at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and the National Audubon Society learn more about how birds are doing, and how to protect them and the environment we share. Last year, more than 140,000 participants submitted their bird observations online, creating the largest instantaneous snapshot of global bird populations ever recorded.
The 28th annual GBBC will be held Friday, February 14 through Monday, February 17, 2025. Please visit the official website at www.birdcount.org for more information and be sure to check out the latest educational and promotional resources.
“This count is so fun because anyone can take part —we all learn and watch birds together—whether you are an expert, novice, or feeder watcher. I like to invite new birders to join me and share the experience. Get involved, invite your friends, and see how your favorite spot stacks up.” -Gary Langham, Chief Scientist
On the program website participants can explore real-time maps and charts that show what others are reporting during and after the count. Be sure to check out the Explore a Region tool to get an idea of what you can expect to see in your area during the next GBBC.

“Climate change is the single greatest threat to North American birds. Solutions are plentiful, but to protect more than 300 species at risk, we must act now.” —National Audubon Society, September 2024.
Approximately 30% of greenhouse gas emissions come from residential and commercial sectors in the U.S. (The breakdown for the remainder is 30% from industry, 30% from transportation and 10% from agriculture.)
2024 broke records for global temperatures and severe weather events. The 10 warmest years in the historical record have all occurred in the past decade (2014-2023). The financial costs of climate change are already being seen with evidence from record breaking damages from severe weather events over the last year. Repair costs are staggering and insurance claims are being denied.
Our community households and local businesses can work towards minimizing our collective impact.
Join Delaware-Otsego Audubon Society (DOAS) on Friday, February 21, 2025 at 7:30 PM on Zoom for a presentation with DOAS Education Chair, Susan O’Handley to look at ways to reduce your household carbon impact and why it is important to take action.
Register at https://mobilize.us/s/AVfczt .
Susan’s program will focus on seven areas where our households, businesses and community operations have carbon impact and will provide an overview of tools and resources to help you establish baseline data and how to track your progress.
Susan will also briefly overview her family’s own journey toward a carbon-neutral household, along with the financial and quality-of-life benefits realized through investing in energy retrofits to their 1902 Victorian Farmhouse in Hartwick.

Join DOAS Board Director, Chris DeCesare, on Saturday, March 15 (rain date: March 22) for a birding field trip to Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge and the adjacent Wetlands Complex to view migratory waterfowl and shorebirds on their annual journey north to their breeding grounds.

Participants can plan to meet at Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge Headquarters at 10:00 a.m. Those wishing to carpool can meet at the Dietz Street Parking Lot, across from the YMCA in Oneonta at 7:30 a.m.
The trip will begin at the refuge headquarters and then proceed by car to hotspots around the complex. There may be a small amount of walking on level ground; restrooms are available at the refuge headquarters. There is no charge for admission.
This is an all-day trip with an expected return to Oneonta around 5:00 p.m. Participants should plan on bringing a bag lunch, snacks, water, etc. For more details, contact Chris DeCesare at 607-244-5496 or chris.decesare444@gmail.com.
About Trip Leader Chris DeCesare:
Like many on the board, I’ve had a lifelong love of nature and being outdoors. This led me to study wildlife biology in college and environmental education in graduate school. It was my ornithology professor who introduced me to the interesting world of birds from nesting bald eagles to the mating ritual of the woodcock and the songs of backyard birds. My favorite memory is sneaking up on woodcocks at dusk in a scrub field with my classmates and throwing ourselves to the ground as a bird twittered to earth from its sky dance.
My work experience includes being a seasonal park ranger at a US Fish and Wildlife Refuge, a seasonal Biological Technician for the US Forest Service and an environmental educator for the NYSDEC. The latter was my career for over 20 years. I currently manage a grant for afterschool program as the Program Director for the Creating Rural Opportunities Partnership (CROP) program.
I have been a part of DOAS as a camp director, a program leader for adults and families, and a Christmas Bird Counter. I’m excited to be on the board to help further the mission. My interests include paddling, hiking, gardening, and spending time with my dog Koa participating in sports such as Scentwork and Dock Diving. Though I love birds, I also have a fondness for insects…Shh!

The Delaware-Otsego Audubon Society will host bestselling author Randi Minetor on Friday, March 21, 2025 at 7:30 p.m. via Zoom. Randi will be discussing her latest book, The Complete Language of Birds, which explores the diverse myths and folklore tales involving birds.
Ancient Egyptians believed that the Earth began as an egg laid by a giant goose. Ojibwa people of America’s northern plains tell of a Great Flood that swept away the world’s evils, and the bird that braved the deep waters to bring a bit of soil up from the bottom to bring land back to the surface. European scientists once believed that swans survived the winters by turning themselves into barnacles and adhering to the bottoms of ships, transforming back into swans in spring.
These and many other tales in The Complete Language of Birds harken back to a time when birds seemed like magical beings with the answers for so many of the world’s questions.
This program is free and open to the public. Those interested in attending can register for the event here:

Event Details
It is estimated that over 1 billion birds die as a result of window collisions each year in North America with 99% of these occurring at residential and low-rise buildings. It is considered to be the third highest cause of bird mortality, following habitat loss and predation by domestic cats.
- Up to 50% of bird-window collisions leave no evidence at all.
- Many of the birds that fly away are likely to die later of their injuries.
- Birds most often suffer concussions and internal injuries which can take days to kill them.
- If a collision kills a parent bird, the young will most likely also die.
- This is all preventable if people take action at their own homes.

On Monday, April 14 from 7:00 to 8:15 PM, join Otsego Land Trust and Delaware-Otsego Audubon Society for our annual Woodcock Walk at the Parslow Road Conservation Area.

This wonderful display occurs in three parts: the strut, the launch skyward, and the spiral back to earth accompanied by buzzy calls and twittering wing sounds.
The walk will begin at 7:15 PM in the parking lot with an introduction to the woodcock and its habits, and a walk on the trail listening and looking for the birds that inhabit this protected property.

Join Delaware-Otsego Audubon Society (DOAS) on Friday, April 18, 2025 at 7:30 p.m. on Zoom for a presentation called “Preventing Bird-Window Collisions at Our Homes.” DOAS Education Chair Susan O’Handley will be presenting.
Birds are facing significant population challenges all over the world. Changes in habitat, seasons that are shifting, severe storms, and increased temperatures are all playing a part in an overall decline in numbers. The National Audubon Society is working to find ways to change those trajectories through significant and ambitious goals in conservation from both ends of the spectrum: increasing the chances for successful breeding bird seasons and reducing bird mortality rates.
We hear a good deal about bird-window collisions that occur in urban environments, because really, when you can show pictures of hundreds of bird deaths in a day during migration season, it becomes news. We read about it, we see pictures of it, and in response, we work to find solutions to prevent it from happening again. What we don’t hear about are the average of two birds per residence per year that occur from window strikes in suburban and rural neighborhoods. Although these don’t feel significant in comparison, if you add those numbers up, the deaths of birds as a result are staggering—more than in any city. It is estimated that over 1 billion birds die as a result of window collisions per year in North America. It is considered to be the third highest cause of bird mortality, following habitat loss and predation by domestic cats.
Susan will provide an overview of the issues that surround building collisions and actions that can be taken at our homes, businesses, schools, and other public buildings to help reduce the number of bird deaths each year.
